Lucy’s Warbler Nesting Boxes: A Community Effort

Apr 30, 2025

Another exciting initiative we are currently working on is a collaboration with 4th Avenue Junior High School to provide nesting boxes for Lucy’s Warblers. This small, insect-eating bird—about the size of a hummingbird—relies on tree cavities for nesting, but as native mesquite woodlands have been cleared, suitable nesting sites have become scarce.

To address this issue, students at 4th Avenue Junior High School are building specialized nesting boxes that will be installed along the Colorado River, where Lucy’s Warblers naturally thrive. This project not only provides critical nesting habitat for these birds but also serves as an incredible educational opportunity for students. By actively participating in conservation efforts, the students gain hands-on experience in wildlife stewardship, habitat restoration, and environmental science.
The nesting boxes will be carefully placed in areas where Lucy’s Warblers are known to nest and forage. Over time, we will monitor their success to see if the birds are utilizing the boxes. If successful, this project could serve as a model for future conservation efforts, showing how simple, community-driven solutions can have a big impact on local wildlife.
