Owl Nesting Barrels: Providing Safe Homes for Raptors

Apr 30, 2025

One of our most exciting ongoing projects involves installing owl nesting barrels throughout Yuma. These barrels, made from repurposed food-grade containers, are strategically placed under hay sheds and in shaded areas to provide safe and sustainable nesting sites for Great Horned Owls, Barn Owls, and other cavity-nesting species.

Why is this project so important? Owls are natural pest controllers, helping to keep rodent populations in check. However, as urban development continues to expand, many of their natural nesting sites—such as hollow trees and old barns—have disappeared. By installing these barrels, we are creating safe nesting opportunities while also promoting a natural and eco-friendly way to control rodent populations in agricultural areas.

The response to this project has been overwhelmingly positive. Local farmers and property owners have welcomed the idea, recognizing the benefits of having nesting owls nearby. Unlike chemical pest control, which can harm other wildlife, owls provide a natural, sustainable solution to managing rodent populations. With each barrel we install, we are taking one more step toward balancing human activity with the needs of our local wildlife.
